Grantmaking Guidelines
Goals
The Gorman Foundation emphasizes giving to solicited organizations within New York State with some exceptions to out-of-state projects of special interest to the Board of Trustees.
Grants are awarded to selected non-profit, IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organizations that support the arts, education, breast cancer prevention, science and religion and who agree to abide by the Foundation’s policy on non-discrimination.
Policy on Nondiscrimination
The Gorman Foundation will not award grant support to organizations that, in their constitution, bylaws or practices, discriminate against a person or group on the basis of age, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or religious belief. Grantees may target services to a particular population when the targeted groups require specialized programs to meet specific needs not shared by the general population.
Restrictions
Grants will not be awarded to individuals; debt reduction drives; or for lobbying activities as defined by the Internal Revenue Service.
Process: Submit a letter of inquiry*
Please include the following information:
- Your organization and its experience in the field;
- What you propose to do, why the project is needed, how it will be carried out, who will be served and where, how you will evaluate success, and how your project or program relates to our areas of emphasis;
- The amount and terms of the grant request, how the funds would be used, the amount of the total project or program budget, and other sources of funds;
- Your IRS determination letter acknowledging your 501(c)(3) status.
- If your request is for $5,000 or less, a letter of inquiry serves as a full proposal application.
*There is a $25,000 limit on all unsolicited grant requests.
For Requests over $5,000
If your grant request is for more than $5,000 and your initial letter of inquiry is approved, the board will request a more detailed proposal for their consideration. WE WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH AN APPLICATION TO SUBMIT.
We may also request a site visit or interview during the application process. Please note that eligibility for further consideration does not assure approval of your proposal.
Deadlines
Grant requests will be reviewed on a quarterly basis. Please submit your letter of inquiry by March 31, June 30, September 30 or December 31. You will be notified of the board’s decision approximately one month after the deadline date.
